of lives. Again it is worth noting that in the list of Upadhyay's virtues we have one set of practical rules. This includes seventy different virtues in the group of one. If you look to these 70 virtues it does include five samiti and three guptis, see f and g in the list of Acharya's virtues. This shows that for Acharya five samitis and three guptis are considered eight different virtues where as for a Sadhu these are in the list of 70 virtues grouped as just one
The answer probably lies in the making of the total numbers of virtues, Arihanta's have Siddhas have Acharya Upadhyay Sadhu
In all there are 108 virtues or attributes. This 108 is an auspicious number and all rosaries normally contain 108 beads. Rosary are very important for meditation and because it contains 108 beads, 108 virtues of 'five god like figures' (panch parmeshtins) have been listed. One is advised to remember these 108 virtues whilst meditating.
1. There are eight different types of siddhis or powers which can be achieved by yogic practices. These are Anima Siddhi, Garima Siddhi, Mahima Siddhi, Laghima Siddhi, Prapti Siddhi and Prakamya Siddhi, Vashitva and Ishita Siddhi. Book 2 page 331 2.
