History of Jains in India's past is rich and varied; their contribution to the Land is unparallel in proportion to their population, and their contribution is found in every segment of India society. Jain expertise and specialty in the field of literature, architecture, painting, medicine and mathematics have had their unique contribution to the development of India and to the growth of Philosophy in general, and Agamic Faith in particular. Recent history of Jains records that Jain business community took a very dominant role in shaping Jain communities across India and Jain intellectuals, professionals and Pandits played a less effective role. However trends have changed recently. These people are now partner in the process in shaping the Jain community. This October 25 and 26 Jain journalists from all over India heralded a new chapter. They gathered in Delhi at the Conference of Jain Journalists. The conference was organised by All India Jain Journalists Association. Journalists, writers and publishers from Jain periodicals, weeklies and others had gathered in Delhi for a 2-day conference. Various issues related to the group and the community were discussed. All in all it was a successful gathering of an influential segment of the Jain community. THIRTY EICHTH ANNOINMENT CEREMONY AT GOMATAGIRI IN KARNATAKA Comatagiri, KA. Lord Bahubali with his resolute and severe austerity symbolises complete detachment from the world. His posture is human in shape and features yet inhuman as an icicle to express perfect idea of successful withdrawal from the round of birth and death. The oldest of such a statue of Lord Bahubali was consecrated over 1006 years ago and many more statues were errected in the following centuries. One such historical statue of Lord Bahubali is found at Comatagiri, 10 miles from Mysore city in India. And in recent years, Comatagiri has become a worth visiting Jain Shrine. Further developments with the construction of Stupa, Jala Mandir and replica reproduction of Sammed Shikarjee Gomatagiri's sanctity has been enhanced. On Sunday, 13 September 1987, the 38th Mastakabhisheka ceremony was organised. Sri Devendrakirti Bhattarak of Humcha Mutt was on hand to inaguarate Jala Mandir and Sammed Shikarjee. Mr Virendra Kumar, secretary General of Janata Party in Kerala state, was the Chief Guest. The officers of Comatagiri shrine, Mr C.B.M.Chandriah - President and Messers G.A.Suresh Kumar and V.K.P. My examination was made in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards, and accordingly, included such test of the accounting records and other such auditing procedures as I considered necessary in the circumstances. As described in Note 1, the Federation of Jain Association in North America uses the cash basis of accounting which recognizes income when collected and records certain expenses when paid. The organization has also prepared its statement of fund balance in a form prescribed by the Federation of Jain Association. These practices differ in some form from generally accepted accounting principles. This report is solely intended for the directors of the Federation of Jain Association in North America and not intended for any other purpose. DR VILAS SANGHAVE SPEAKS ON DYNAMISM & STRENGTHS OF JAINISM Kolhapur, MR. One of India's best socialogist, Dr Vilas Sanghave was invited to address at a function organised to felicitate sri Laxmisena Bhattarak of Kolhapur Jain Mutt, Maharashtra. Dr Sanghave delivered the theme of his talk in a refreshing line of thoughts why Jain Religion is still dynamic in addressing the issues of world problems as hunger, proliferation of arsenals and social injustices. He drew the attention to the principles and preachings of Syadvada, Samyama, Aparigraha, Ahimsa and vegetarianism as taught by Tirthankaras since centuries and centu ries, and explained the applications of the principles in addressing these problems. "Budhism and Jain Religion, born in India, enjoyed supremacy through centuries, and only Jain Religion survived though its influence waned," Dr Sanghave explained, and further he observed, "that Jainism survived in India due to its positive internal strenghts and the dynamism of its philosophy and the practise of it by its followers." To the Jina who has conquered fear, who has conquered all afflictions, who has conquered sensual vexations and the passions. who has conquered the emotions, attachment, aversions & delusion, who has conquered pleasure and pain, I bow to him. 2010_02 For Priva19 & Personal Use Only Page #21 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ JAIN DEVOTIONAL SONGS FROM AIR CALICUT Calicut, KR. Perhaps this is the first pictorial book written primarily for children living outside India. The original author Dr Kumarpal Desai, a well known Gujarati professor and a journalist from Ahmedabad, India, has written the biography of Lord Mahavir in simple and understandable language as it is geared for children in their early years of schooling. The 20-page book has illustrative narration with a picture or two drawn. The English translation of the title is by Vinod Kapashi and the pictures are beautifully produced by Rajni Vyas. The book will definitely be welcome by the children as well the parents and it could be used as a good classroom material for teaching. Over all, the book, Lord Mahavira is good in all respect. However, on page 18 the pictures and the narration would definitely raise certain questions about its relevency or irrelevency in the minds of the children because the Human Phenomena in Jain Faith preempts ali other things. This is one negative aspect, I think, contradicts the human phenomena the Jain religion and philosophy speak of. It is a great book for children in the west and the efforts of Kumarpal Desai and Vinod Kapashi are commendable. I hope more such publications will come from them in the future. All Jain societies could encourage their effots through buying the book, Lord Mahavira. 2010_02 - by "Bhuvanendra " 21 Page #23 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Some Points in Jain Teachings Count Arnold Keyserling The first clue to the message of Jainism is given in its name derived from jina which means 'a conqueror.' The Jain wants to conquer his own personal life, whatever it might be. He venerates only the people who, as he knows, have achieved the goal. He therefore follows the Tirthankaras as his guides. If he attains the goal, it will mean that his personal essence or soul has reached immortality. The Jain starts from the premise that there exists a great number of individual beings, that all these beings could one day achieve immortality, and thus the right attitude for the Jain is to strive to attain his personal fulfilment, and also, at the same time, to help others to achieve their individual fulfilment. This is the metaphysical kernel of the teaching of Mahavira. Salvation lies not only in attaining a state, or in following a moral precept, but in developing the individual being whoever and whatever he might be to its utmost fulfilment. Only in achieving this fulfilment, man will serve as a link between striving nature and perfected beings. From this emerges clearly the purpose of human existence. Man has an inner essence, a "soul." The right attitude towards this soul is given in the doctrine of Ahimsa it is wrong to hinder the development of this soul So Ahimsa means not only something negative-as refraining from killing and doing injury- but also something positive: it means to take the existing being, whatever and however it might be, as the starting point. Souls have certain characteristics, certain possibilities. Owing to individual achievement and Karma, each soul has a definite personal way. And it is this personal way which should be accepted as the basis of human society. But not only the human being has a soul in this sense; every animate being even every existing phenomenon of nature has as its ultimate cause a divine spark, which one day may also develop and pass through the human form to attain its individual immortality. Thus Man stands not against nature--he is the real pontifex maximus linking, in his striving, the earth with the heaven, if he achieves the goal. Why did Mahavira and many of the earlier Tirthankars start and continue their life and teachings as ascetics? Because Man tends to confuse the means with the ends Man is perishable on earth. If he identifies himself with his earthly possessions, he will lose himself. Thus the discipline of asceticism is a method and a means, it is not an end. It serves to liberate the human essence from its attachment to animal impulses and instincts. 2010_02 Page #24 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ________________ Trips to Las Vegas Hawaii And Around The World CALL JAYA TRAVEL 3221 W.
