"te dhannA te punnA, jesiM guNAnurAo, te paNAmo havijja maha niccaM / akittimo hoi aNavarayaM // 3 // jinake hRdayakamala niraMtara hI saguNoM ke prati anurAga se praphullita rahate haiM, ve dhanya haiM, puNyavAna haiM aura praNamya haiN| 3. I always bow in obeisance To the blessed and meritorious ones Who have the natural, inborn and constant ability Of appreciating the good qualities of others.

"kiM bahuNA bhaNieNaM, ikkaM guNAnurAyaM, kiM vA tavieNaM ki vA dANeNaM / sikkhaha sukkhANaM kulabhavaNaM" ||4|| kyA hogA atyadhika par3hane se, tapa karane se aura dAna se1 eka saguNAnurAga ko hRdayaMgama karane kA prayAsa karo kyoMki guNAnurAga sabhI sukhoM kA bhavana hai / 4. What is the use of excessive study, penance and benevolence? Focus exclusively on attaining one thing: The ability to appreciate the good qualities of others. This ability is the abode of all happiness. 5. "jar3a carasi tavaM viulaM, na dharasi guNAnurAyaM, padasi suyaM karisi vivihakaTThAI / paresu tA niSphalaM sayalaM" // 5 // he jIva, yadi tU guNIjanoM ke saguNoM ke prati sacyA anurAga nahIM rakhatA, to.. tere dvArA kiye gae vipula tapa, svAdhyAya tathA kAyakleza niSkala haiM / 5. ________________ "souNaM guNukkarisaM, annassa karesi maccharaM jivi| tA nUNaM saMsAre, parAhavaM sahasi savvattha" // 6 // "guNavaMtANaM narANaM, isAbharatimirapUrio bhaNasi / jaI kahavi dosalesaM, tA bhamisi bhave apArammi" // 7 // sunakara yadi dUsaroM ke saguNoM kA bakhAna yadi tujhe IrSyA ho jAve, to terI hAra pakkI hai| 7. gara IrSyA hai tujhameM bhI, jAna lenA avazya abhI paranindA jo karI kabhI, bhaTakegA tU yhiiN-yhiiN| 6. If you feel envy upon hearing the good qualities of others, You are certain to meet with defeat wherever you go. 7. O living being full of darkness and envy, When you criticise the virtuous ones, You are certain to wander endlessly in samsara.

X Conduct of the Supremely Excellent Ones 15, 16. Despite living amongst the most beautiful women, Bursting with youth, beauty and fragrance... One who is celibate from birth

________________ "AjammabaMbhayArI, maNavayaNakAehiM jo dharai sIlaM / savvuttamuttamo puNa, so puriso savvanamaNijjo" // 16 // "evaMvihajuvaigao, jo rAgI huja kahavi igasamayaM / bIyasamayammi niMdai, taM pAvaM savvabhAveNaM" // 17|| uttamottama puruSa 17,18. atyaMta sundara striyoM ke bIca rahakara bhI jisake, mana maiM palabhara bhI jo vikAra Ave turata pachatA kara use haTAve / ...jI tanika bhI vicalita nA hotA ho tIna karaNa se jo pAle hai zIlavrata vahI puruSa sarvottamottama hai| Conduct of the Excellent Ones / And follows the vow of celibacy through mind, speech and body, Is Supremely Excellent and deserves universal praise. 17, 18. He may be momentarily affected by feelings of attachment Upon seeing the most gorgeous women, But recovers the very next moment And criticises his transgression from the bottom of his heart.

________________ 12 "jammammi tammi na puNo, so hoi uttamottama havijja rAgo maNammi jassa kyaa| ruvo puriso mahAsatto" ||18|| prAyazcitta kI gaMgA meM nahAve aura phira sAvadhAna nirvikAra ho jAve vaha mAnusa uttamottama kahalAve / He shall bathe in the river of atonement, And shall never again allow his mind to be attracted. Such a person is Excellent. "picchar3a juvairuvaM, jo na carar3a akajjaM, 19. maNasA ciMter3a ahava khaNamegaM / patthijjaMto vi itthihiM" ||19|| uttama puruSa jo yuvatI ke rUpa ko nirakhe hiya meM apane rAga le Ave lekina maukA pAkara bhI vaha kabhI na khoTA kAma kare sau mAnusa uttama kahalAve / Conduct of the Good 19. He may gaze at young women, And even feel momentary attraction. But does not indulge in immoral conduct, Even when the opportunity presents itself. 12

________________ "sAhu vA saGko vA, sadArasaMtosasAyaro hujjA / / so uttamo maNusso, nAyavvo thovasaMsAroM" // 20 // "purisatthesu pavaTTai, ___ jo puriso dhamma-atthapamuhesu / anunnamanAbAha, majjhimaruvo havai eso" // 21 / / madhyama puruSa 21. dharma, artha, kAma jo saive, satata mokSa kI bhAvanA bhAye sau mAnava madhyama khlaaye| uttama puruSa jogI hI, sAdhaka ho, duniyAdArI se judA ho, bhakta ho, gRhastha ho, duniyAdArI meM pha~sA ho, jo bhI Avaka svadArasaMtoSa meM AsthA rakhe sI uttama hai, aura usakA alpa saMsAra zeSa hai| 20. 20. Amonk, Or a layman completely faithful towards his spouse, Both are good persons and shall wander in samsara for only a short while. NB Jain ascetics practise complete and absolute chastity. Laypersons do not. But a layman who is completely faithful to his spouse also deserves to be held in esteem. Conduct of the Average 21. One who makes unceasing efforts in the four fields __of endeavour, Dharma kpiety), Artha {profit}, Kama {pleasure and Moksha {liberation}, Is the Average person.

________________ "eesiM purisANaM jai guNagahaNaM karesi bahumANA / tA Asannasivasuho, __hosi tuma natthi saMdeho" // 22 // "pAsatthAisu ahuNA, saMjamasiDhillesu mukkajogesu / no garihA kAyavvA, neva pasaMsA sahAmajjhe" // 23 / / 23. 22. ina puruSoM se jo sAdara guNagrahaNa kA bhAva rakhegA so mAnava bahuta jalda hI ziva sukha kI paayegaa| koI sAdhu asaMyamI ho, yA phira svacchaMda ho to bhI, kabhI na usakI nindA karanA. nA hI sabhA meM guNa gaanaa| 22. If you make efforts to respectfully appreciate the good qualities of such persons, (The Supremely Excellent, the Excellent, the Good and ___the Average), Then you shall doubtlessly attain the bliss of liberation very soon. 23. You should not criticise or excoriate those monks, Who are lax in self-control and unrestrained in conduct. Nor should you praise them in public.

________________ 15 "kAUNa tesu karuNaM, jai mannai to payAsae maggaM / aha rusai to niyamA, na tesiM dosaM payAsae" ||24|| 24. aise sAdhu para karuNA rakhanA, mAne to sanmArga para lAnA, na mAne to nindA bhata karanA / 24. If monks with lax conduct are willing to listen you, Show them the right path. Else, if the mere mention of the right path angers them, Do not pronounce their faults, show compassion. "saMpai dusamasamae, bahumANo kAyavvo, 29. dIsai thovo vi jassa dhammaguNo / tassa yA dhammabuddhi" ||25|| Aja ke duSkara jIvana meM jahA~ dharma kI kiraNa dilI vahIM usakA bahumAna karo / 25. In this difficult world, wherever you find even a little goodness, Treat it with great respect and look upon it with a positive attitude. 15

________________ 16 "jau paragacchi sagacche, siM guNAnurAyaM, je saMviggA bahussuyA muNiNo / mA muMcasu maccharapahao" ||26|| 26. sAdhu cAhe apane saMgha kA ho yA ho dUsare saMgha kA, jahA~ bhI dikhe uttama sAdhu guNAnuvAda cUkanA / se mata 26. Whether they belong to your gaccha (ascetic lineage) or another, Never let envy stop you from appreciating the good qualities of monks Who are highly learned and fearful of samsara. "guNarayaNamaMDiyANaM, sulahA annabhavammiya, 20. bahumANaM jo karei suddhamaNo / tassa guNA huMti niyameNaM" ||27|| jo ho svaccha citta vAlA, guNIjanoM kA so pAvegA unake ve guNa parabhava meM, yaha nizcita hai| 27. It is certain, That one who most sincerely admires the good qualities of others, Who are studded with the gems of good qualities, Shall attain their qualities in the next birth. 16

________________ 17 "evaM guNAnurAyaM, somasuMda sammaM jo dharai dharaNimajjhammi / so pAvai savvanamaNijaM // 28 // 28. jo dhAraNa kareM guNAnurAga, so pAveM mokSakala bar3abhAga / 28. Anyone on earth who follows the habit Of truly appreciating the good qualities of others, Shall be worshiped by all And shall attain the somasundara {luminous and beautiful} State of Liberation. 17
