Everyone is in search of permanent happiness. In the present times, Science & Technology has provided us with comfort & luxury of material pleasures. But there is lack of inner happiness & harmony. Yoga is a means to achieve it. According to Jainism, Soul & Matter (Body) are different. Yoga as a Science of self-realisation enables us to experience pure soul-devold of matter. Religion is the innate nature of a thing & Yoga helps us to realise true nature of one's own soul. Jainism is the religion of Jina - the victor. One has to achieve the victory over passions & this can be made possible through Right vision, Right knowledge & Right conduct - the three jeweles of Yoga. It helps to explore the Science of Soul. How does mind be controlled? How ego can be eliminated? Yoga reveals mysteries of universe - the Eternal Truth of Life & Universe through enlightenment. Yoga is a Science of well-being & art of living with others in rhythamatic way. Essence of Yoga is top live a truly fulfilling life. Yoga is a means to achieve lasting peace, the mental suffering, physical suffering & suffering on account of outside agency can be avoided by means of Yoga. Jain Yoga embraces a wide range of disciplines. In Jainism Yoga is integrated with daily living. The main components of Jain Yoga principles are - (1) Three Jeweles - Right faith, Right knowledge, Right con duct. (2) Ethical disciplines - Rules of conduct. (3) Restraning of the senses. (4) Equanimity Haribhadrasuri has equated Patanjalis eight limbs of Yoga with eight visions (drastic) Among the four goals of human objectives, liberation is the foremost, As already stated, the path of liberation con-- 218 | યોગમાર્ગની અંતર્દષ્ટિ 16-01-19 -sists of Right faith or Right vision (samyagdarshan), Right knowledge (Samyaggyan), Right Conduct (Samyagcharitra) which is also designated as three jeweles which is Yoga. (Hemchandracharya's Yogashastra - 1.15) In Jainism the Right faith is defined as belief in seven principles (Tattvas) etc. Right knowledge is correct understanding of them & Right conduct is abandonment of all improper activities. There are five small vows for householders & five great vows for monks. They are elaborately discussed in Jain scriptures - such as Tattvarthsutra. Conduct is the Religion. The Code of conduct (1) Non-violence (2) Truth (3) Non-stealing or honesty (4) Continence (Brahmacharya) (5) Non-attachment to possession i.e. Aparigraha In this way, concept of five names of Patanjali's Yogashastra is also present in the form of five rules of conduct in Jainism Acharya Hemchandra discusses different meanings of Yoga - including meditation. Patanjali's concept of meditation is included in Jaina thought. Yoga teaches you to know your true identity which gives you inner peace & poise. Yoga is a means to unveil your true self. According to Jainism, the true nature of self is nothing but the state of equanimity. One needs to be an observer - the state in which self remains undisturbed by attachment & aversion. It is a state which can be achieved by practice of Righteous meditation - Pure meditation - Shukladhyana - Activities of mind & body are controlled - one meditates on soul. Jainism approves of those postures (Asanas) which are beneficial in meditation. The word dhyan is used in a wider sense that comprehends samadhi also.
