________________ AT BENARES 41 sounder basis than before. The College, which admitted students of all castes and creeds, rapidly prospered. The number of students immediately increased. These students devoted themselves to the study of Jain literature and philosophy. Besides learning Sanskrit, they learnt Prākrit, the language of the Jain sacred books—the language which had long been neglected as a language, and almost forgotten. HEMACHANDRĀCHĀRYA JAINA PUSTAKĀLAYA Two years later a library under the name of Hemachandrächārya Jaina Pustakälaya was founded and added to the College, which thus afforded additional facilities to the students. The library contains a rare collection of ancient and modern works, written in English, Gujarati, Hindi, and Sanskrit. It was placed under the kind care and supervision of the learned Upādhyāya Shri Indra Vijaya, the first and the ablest disciple of the Āchārya. The College has flourished ever since under the able guidance of Dharma Vijaya, whose life in Benares has been, as it is always and everywhere else, an example of usefulness, self-devotion, and self-sacrifice.
