PREFACE,
The present edition of Hemachandra's Unādiganasūtra is based on the owing materials:
I, MSS. of the Unüdiganasūtra. B., MS. Orient. fol. 1176 of the Royal Library of Berlin, see Prof. Weber, Catalogue, Vol. II, Part I., Nro. 1695. I would add to the Escription, given there, that 599 Sūtras have been given in the middle of e pages, and the remainder has been embodied with the Commentary, as ell as that this fact is mentioned in the Aryā verse, found at the end of he MS.:
अन्तर्गतानि सूत्राण्येतानि पृथकृतानि पठनार्थम् ।
a aatrastania agaTÈALT II ? Il The date appears to be the Southern Vikrama year 1604, Srāvana badi 14, a Thursday, Nakshatra Tishya, and it corresponds on this supposition according to Dr. Schram's calculation to August 2, 1548, which was a Thursday. Pushya or Tishya was the Nakshatra during two-thirds of the Tithi mentioned.
C., MS. Orient. fol. 740 of the Royal Library of Berlin, Weber, op. cit. Nro. 1682, containing Hemacliandra's Sabdānašāsana, Adhyāyas VVII, with the Laghuvritti and Chūrni (see below under III, 6). The text alone of the Uņādisūtras is appended to the second Pada of the fifth Adhyāya, filling fols. 148, b.-153, b. Fol. 1 49 is written by another hand, whereby the end of Sūtra 33, Sūtras 34–46, and the beginning of Sūtra 17 have been lost. Another lacuna extends from the end of Sūtra 57 to the beginning of Sūtra 61. Moreover, the Sūtras 70-76 and 181–183, which ought to occur on the same leaf are missing. The part of the MS. which gives the Uņādis is datod Samvat 1470.
T., a MS. belonging to a Jaina library and obtained for me on loan from Mr. Bhagvāndās Kevaldās through the Committee of the Imp. Academy, which supervises the publication. It contains on 51 fols. numbered 1-51 and 650--700, both the text and the commentary, which are written continuously.
