________________ 59.60. The Udyotakaras and the number of ślokas for different Kāyotsargas are as follows: Regarding day - four - 25 ślokas Regarding night - two - 127 ślokas Regarding Fortnight - Twelve 75 - ślokas Regarding Four months - Twenty - 125 ślokas Regarding'year - Forty - 252 ślokas It is to be noted that one śloka is equivalent to four respirations. 61. Going out, coming back, moving from one place to another, sleeping, dreaming, crossing the river by boat and Iryā - pathikī Pratikramana - in all these activities, the Kāyotsarga is of 25 respirations. 62. While imparting lessons of śruta and their meanings, one has to do Kāyotsarga of 27 respirations and while giving permission to teach others and to establish Svādhyāya Mandali (study group) one has to do Kāyotsarga of 8 respirations. 63. Likewise to study and recite the Śrutas at inappropriate times, giving lessons to an imprudent person, giving lessons with their meaning to others - in all these activities one has to observe Kāyotsarga. 64. The disciple asked - Lord ! a monk who does not transgress the limits of Śruta while giving lessons to others, has also to observe Kāyotsarga. Is it not futile to prescribe Kāyotsarga even without any fault ?' 65. Ācārya replied - "Just to get rid of sins, one observes Kāyotsarga considering it to be benedictory, let not our activities be hindered by any obstacle in the absence of benedictory actions. Hence one observes Kāyotsarga, an act of benediction.' 66. If, while dreaming one indulges in violence, falsehood, theft, uncelebacy and accumulations, one has to observe Kāyotsarga of 100 respirations. 67. The time - duration of one respiration is to recite one pada of a sloka. This is the time duration of Kāyotsarga. 68. If a monk, even though, capable of doing Kāyotsarga, does not observe it in the wake of delusion, he is not able to cut short his karmas. He will have to bear the consequences thereof. Who else will suffer from the fruits of his actions ? 53 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
