________________ 126 TIRTHANKARA MAHAVIRA AND HIS SARVODAYA TIRTHA rāgādinamaruppā ahimsagattam tti desidam samaye tesim ce uppatti himsetti jinehi niddittha175 The genesis of attachment, etc, in the soul is violence and their non-genesis is non-violence. Even Puruşārthasıdd śloka 44,176 states like this. Attachment, etc, are inclusive of all the twentyfive passions and hence are alike violence.177 Violence may be subjective or objective. The genesis of attachment, etc , is subjective violence and their application on some object like slaughter is objective violence Keeping both these in view Acarya Umaswami has defined non-violence as: pramattayogāt prānavyaparopanam lumsā"78 The killing of self or another out of delusion is violence The Jaina texts have discussed non-violence-violence in great details Specially interested reader should look up the appendix. Non-violence is the highest religion; state of detachment is religion and absence of violence, etc, is detachment.
