aptly gives the discussions of both Sáradātanya and Subandhu on nătaka. The next sub-section begins with Oscar Brockett's definition of play. Then are explained the plot, characters, dialogue and other elements of the play in the west lucidly with apt illustrations wherever necessary. The final section presenting the comparative study of both is enlightening.
Viśvanātha's illustration of Mahānātaka, namely, Rājasekhara's Bälarāmāyana, is taken up as the study in the sccond chapter. The Balabhāratam of Rājaśckhara is critically analysed thereafter. This is followed by the critical study of the play Adbhutadarpaņa of Mahādeva.
The third chapter discusses the Problem of the Hanumannnātaka by introducing the reader to both the recensions of the play, namely, that of Damodara Miśra with fourteen acts with the same title and that of Madhusudana Miśra entitled 'Mahānātakam' with nine acts. After showing the differences between the two, the recension with fourteen acts is critically analysed by applying the conditions required for the play being a Mahānātaka. The author reaches the conclusion that this is neither a nātaka nor a mahānațaka in a very systematic and convincing way.
The fourth chapter, namely, the conclusion is the summary of the discussion presented so far. At the end, Dr. Mehta upholds the view of Viśvanātha. In the Appendix, he gives a very brief sketch of the six Mahānātakas from 14th century A.D. onwards.
Dr. Mehta has donc an excellent work in bringing before the readers a subject untouched by most of the scholars on the field, especially in Hindi. In just 57 pages, he has given a complete picture of the concept of the Mahānātaka with illustrations by providing all the available views on the subject with absolute clarity.

સંસ્કૃતના અધ્યાપન ક્ષેત્રમાં ન હોય છતાં સંસ્કૃતના વિદ્વાનોને પણ શરમાઈ જવું પડે એવું કામ કરનારા અન્ય ક્ષેત્રોના વિદ્વાનોમાં શ્રી જેઠાલાલ શાહ છે. તેઓ વિદ્યાવ્યાસંગી, ધર્મપરાયણ, સંસ્કૃતની સદાય ઉપાસના કરનારા, તત્ત્વજ્ઞાનના અભ્યાસી છે. આજે જ્યારે સંસ્કૃત ગ્રંથોની ટીકાઓને સંસ્કૃતના વિદ્વાનો પણ સમજવાની કોશિશ કરતા નથી ત્યારે વિદ્યાવતાં ભાવિલે પરીક્ષા સૂક્તિ મુજબ ભાગવત અને એમાં પણ પાછી શ્રીમદ્ વલ્લભાચાર્યજીની સુબોધિની ટીકામાં પોતાની કૃતિને નિર્દેશીને સરસ ગ્રંથ લખનાર શ્રી જેઠાલાલ શાહ “ઊર્મિલ' અભિનંદન અને સવિનય પ્રમાણના અધિકારી છે.
૪૫૫ પાનાંઓમાં તેમણે આ ગ્રંથ “સ્વાધ્યાય' માટે જ લખ્યો હતો, પણ તેમના જમાઈના સાત્ત્વિક આગ્રહને કારણે આ પુસ્તક લોકોને સુલભ બન્યું. કે.કા. શાસ્ત્રીજીની આજ્ઞા પણ કારણભૂત બની. ૫. કે.કા. શાસ્ત્રીજીના પરિમાર્જન, પરામર્શન અને સ્પર્શને લીધે ગ્રંથને વધુ ઉત્તમ બનવાની તક મળી છે. આ રીતે ૫.પૂ. ગોસ્વામી શ્રી રાજેશ કુમારજીના શબ્દોને ટાંકીએ તો “પુષ્ટિમાગીય વૈષ્ણવો તેમ ધર્મપ્રેમી ઇતર સંપ્રદાયોના અનુયાયીઓ માટે પણ આ ગ્રંથ અમૂલ્ય બની રહે તેવો છે.'- મને જરાક સુધારવાનું મન થાય છે કે ભાગવતને સમજવાની કોશિશ કરનાર દરેકને આ ગ્રંથ જરૂર વાંચવો ગમે તેવો છે.
