ascetism and suffering cannot advance a saint an inch on the path of Liberation, if he has not understood and realized his ownself the essence of Samayasára.
विएस मोक्खमग्गो पाखंडी गिहमयाणि लिंगाणि । दंसणणाणचरिताणि मोक्खमगं जिणा विंति ॥ ४३२ ॥ नाप्येष मोक्षमार्गः पाखंडिगृहमयानि लिंगानि । दर्शनज्ञानचरित्राणि मोक्षमार्ग जिना वदन्ति ॥ ४३२ ॥
432, The marks of the householder and of the ascetic are never the path to Liberation; right belief, knowledge and conduct (combined) are the path to Liberation. The conquerors say so.
जह्मा जहित लिंगे सागारणगारि एहि वा गहिदे । दंसणणारचरिते प्रयाणं जुंज मोक्खपहे ॥ ४३३॥ तस्मात्तु हित्वा लिंगानि सागारैरनगारिकैर्वा गृहीतानि । दर्शन ज्ञानचरित्रे आत्मानं सुंदव मोक्षपथे ॥। ४३३ ।।
433. Therefore giving up the external marks adopted by the householders or ascetics absorbs the soul in right belief, knowledge and conduct which is the path of Liberation.
मुक्खप अप्पा ठवेहि वेदयहि कायहि तं चैव । तत्थेव विहर णिच्च माविहरसु एणदव्वे ॥ ४३४॥ मोक्षपथे श्रात्मानं स्थापय वेदय ध्यायहि तं चैव । तत्रैव विहर नित्यं मा विहार्षीरन्यद्रव्येषु ॥ ४३४ ॥
434. Fix the soul in the path of Liberation. Realize and also concentrate upon it. And therein always roam Do not roam about in other substances.

Commentary.
We should be non-attentive to all the other substances except our own souls. Each step in self-meditation is an advance on the path of Liberation.
