Importance of Guru in Life
Reshma Jain
गुरु ब्रह्मा गुरुविष्णू गुरुः देवो महेश्वरा
गुरु शाक्षात परब्रह्म तस्मै श्री गुरुवे नमः
|| Guru Brahma Guru Vishnu Guru Devo Maheshwar || || Guru Sakshaat Parbrahma Tas Mayi Shree Guruve Namah ||
Loosely Interpreted this first shloka of the Guru Stotram means Guru is Brahma (the creator) Guru is Vishnu (the sustainer) Guru is Maheshwar (the destroyer) Guru is Sakshaat Parbrahma (the supreme etemal truth) and thus I bow down to Him. Yes; Guru is the creator of the first desire to liberate. In fact Guru is the creator of the sadhak. A strong intense wish to be better, to pregoress, to get out of the incessant ups and downs of the wordly life.
૧૩૨
Guru is the sustainer -- without constant
margdarshan and discourse one would give up or get into depression at the innumerable hindrances and failures which one faces not as much from external as much as ones own
weakness.
Guru is the destroyer of mithya (illusion) and aham (identity with I) which are the two biggest blocks in our spiritual well being as well as the cause of incessant cycle of life and death but most importantly pain and sadness.
Guru is the supreme eternal truth personified the living example that the path may be difficult but the goal is not impossible. Guru is anand (joy) personified. Guru is the best
example of what is the final result on the spiritual path.
So, what exactly is that makes the Guru so important?
Gu' means - deep darkness and Ru' means ray of light. Thus Guru is the ray of light that dissipates darkness of ignorance. So if it wasn't for Him, we would not be able to comprehend our own true nature and would continue to live through this life blindly and purposeless always looking for happiness externally and always blaming the external for failures and limitations. Sant Kabirji's famous couplet
गुरु गोविन्द दोहु खड़े, काके लांगू पाँय.. बलिहारी गुरु आपने, गोविन्द दियो बताये
|| Guru Govind Dohu Khade, Kaake Laagu Paaye.. Balihaari Guru Aapne, Govind Diyo Bataaye || We are presently doing swadhyay on Vivekchudamani Granth of Shri Adi Shankracharyaji. The last few deep discourses of Pujya Gurudevshri Rakeshbhai on this fabulous scripture are about how each one of us is a world in itself. We carry our world within us. We see that we wish to see, we hear what we wish to hear
and we do acts based on our interpretation of it. In a nut shell - each world is a projection of their own mind. We like and love people whose projection is aligned with ours and the ones
whose projection interferes with ours are the ones we don't like or hate and may even call them enemies and then the bigger problem is the expectations that everyone we come across should align their projections with us.
