He who controls the senses and passions and concentrates on the self through meditation and scriptural study observes austerity definitely. -- Adh. Sā. 18.156 2. Austerities are of two kinds : external and internal. Exter nal austerities are of six kinds and internal also are of six kinds. — Utta. Sū. 30.7 3. External austerities are: 1. fasting, 2. eating less than one's normal diet, 3. seeking alms, 4. abstention from tasty food, 5. mortification of the body and 6. solitude. – Utta. Sū. 30.8 4. That fasting is true when the person observing it does not entertain any inauspicious thought, when his senses do not become weak and when the activities of his mind, speech and body remain unimpaired. - Ma. Sa. 134 5. A person should practise fasting only after taking into con sideration his physical strength, prowess, devotion, state of health and the knowledge of time and place. - Daśa.
