________________ form and the scribe seems to have been well-educated and expert at his job. Slips of pen are very few. For our edition we have used a photoenlargement, as the actual Ms. belonging to the Jinabhadragani Jñānabhaņdār at Jesulmere was not for lending. The paper Ms. can be said to be textually indentical with the palm leaf Ms. There are only orthographical variants, no textual ones. Most probably both the Mss, were based on an identical original. Haribhadra's Neminahacariya was brought to notice in modern times firstly in the BỊhattip panikā published by Muni Jinavijaya in the 'Jain Sahitya Samsodhak' (I ii, p. 8). The entry no. 271 in the BỊhatfippanika is as follows: Nemicaritam Prao 1216 varșe Haribhadrācāryaiḥ kṣtam 8032. The same infor mation was repeated in later sources like the Jain Granthavali.2 The two available Mss. of the Neminahacariya have been descriptively noticed in the Mss. catalogue of the Jesulmere Bhandārs and that of the L. D. Institute of Indology, Ahmedabad. The present text of the Nemināhacariya is almost exclusively based on the Jesulmere palm leaf, though, of course, the paper Ms. also has been consulted throughout and significant orthographic variants noted. Instead of the original palm leaf, we have used, as already remarked, a photographic enlargement of its microfilm, kindly lent us by Maharaj Shri Punyavijayaji from his private collection. It is designated as for noting variant readings. The photo-enlargement has seventy sheets, numbered from 448 to 517. At several places, the orthographic form as found in the paper Ms. has been adopted in the edited text in preference to that in the palm leaf, and in every such case the form in the latter has been recorded in the footnotes. In a few places where the writing in the palm leaf was illegibly blurred, we have been guided by the paper Ms. All such places have been indicated in the footnotes. The original palm leaf Ms. has 304 leaves. Each leaf measures 40x3 cin, with 3 to 5 lines per side and about 130 letters per line. Two one and a half centimetre intervening blanks divide the lines in three parts. The Ms. has been prepared quite carefully and systematically. The hand is neat. steady and uniform. Confusing, omitting or misplacing of either letters or the anusvāra mark or the post-consonantal vowel signs are comnaratively very few. Marginal corrections and additions in the Ms. are 2.
