________________ PENANCE *Penance performed with the desire of earning fame etc., is not pure penance. That is to say, selfpurification must be the only purpose of penance. Penance is of two kinds external and internal. External penance comprises fasting; taking a very limited quantity of food (so as to leave the stomach partly empty); acceptance of particular food only from a particular place, at a particular time and in particular condition; abstinence from including in tastes of the tongue; endurance of physical hardship and self-abstraction. Internal penance consists of expiation, lofty and pious mentality, hospitality, study, meditation and seclusion.' "That some Jeevas have attained, are attaining, or will attain emancipation, should be understood to be the result of such penance.'
