________________ Preface Varieties of Bandha The bondage of Jiva and karma has been classified into 'Prakṛti', 'Sthiti, 'Anubhaga' and 'Pradeśa' bandha. The first i. e., the prakṛti bandha deals with the nature of the Karmic bondage; e.g. the nature of opium is intoxication. Similarly the 'Jñänävaraniya' Karma obstructs the knowledge; the 'Darianävaraniya' obstructs darsana (form of consciounsess, which precedes knowledge); Vedaniya' enables the soul to have sensations of pleasure or pain through senses; 'Mohaniya, the ringleader of the Karmas, causes delusion and perverse vision of the self and non-self; 'Ayuh' determines the length of life in a particular body; 'Nama' is responsible for physical form, complexion, constitution etc, 'Gotra' decides the birth in high or low family and the last one, 'Antaraya', acts as an impediment in the acquisition and enjoyment of things, possession of strength etc. These eightfold Karmas are further sub-divided into 148 varieties. The present volume deals with this präkṛti bandha from several stand-points. The second one i.e., 'sthiti bandha'determines duration of the bondage; the third. 'anubhāga bandha' deals with the potentiality of various karmas, the foruth, 'pradeśa bandha' causes the division of karmic molecules into several varieties in accordance with the vibrations of the soul. The modern worldy-wise man perhaps may think that this work has not bearing upon life and it is a mere display of intellectual exercises. २१ An aspirant for liberation will immediately differ from this viewpoint. In Mahabandha he will find wonderful remedy for warding off the feelings of attachment or aversion and thereby uplift the soul to the sphere of equanimous contemplation, which ultimately leads to the final beatitude. One who devotes himself to the study of this work is so deeply engrossed therein, that he forgets for a while. the world of attachment and aversion. His Holiness the Digamber Jain Acarya Caritra Cakravarti Sri Säntisägar Mahārāj had once remarked, "This Shastra must be thoroughly studied by those who are tired of transmigration and who long for liberation. Proper knowledge of Bandha-Tattva is essential before proceeding towards the ultimate goal of purity and perfection." In the end, we deem it our duty to express our sincere gratefulness to Sri D. Manjjaiya Heggade, B. A., M.L.C., Dharmasthala, His Holiness Bhattarak Sriman Charukirti Panditacharya Swami, Moodbidri and the trustees of the Jain Siddhanta Temple, Moodbidri, (South Kanara) for the kind permission to take a copy from the original text preserved in the Siddhanta Mandir. Diwakar Sadan Seoni. (M.P.) 6th January, 1947 We are also thankful to Danvir Sri Shanti Prasal Jain, B. Sc., the founder of the Bharatiya Jñana-Pitha Kashi, through whose munificence this volume is coming to the hands of the public.
