________________ Education, Literature and Sciences 369 (madhumeha).1 Hospitals (tigichchhayasalā) are freely mentioned. The Nāyādhammakha mentions that a hospital was built on hundred pillars where a number of physicians and surgeons were employed who treated various kinds of patients with various kinds of medicines and herbs. There were state physicians and hospitals as well. The physicians carried their bage of surgical instruments and gave various treatment according to the nature of the disease. SCIENCE OF ENGINEERING The science of Engineering seems to have become very popular and well-developed. The construction of cities, forts palaces, buildings, tanks, canals, etc. would not have been possible without a proper study of the subject. Even the Bhikshus, who now-a-days are seen only having a life of ease and comfort and engaging themselves merely in religious and philosophical studies and meditations, were then enthusiasti. cally concerned with the work of superintending the construction of fine buildings." 1.
