The verse No. 97 Equatenuitat ATORT:... etc. is quoted in the Kavyaprakasa as an example of the 4th kind of Atiśayokti Alankâra, by Mammata (circ. 11th century A. D.), intory (circ, 1216 A. D.) probably the earliest commentator on Kavyaprakasa (as he does not mention any commentary before him) does not indicate the source of this or any other verse in his tîka. mfare (circ. 14th century A. D.) also in his tika "aeta" does not mention any source. One commentator HÈ ATT takes the reading arcant: instead of Topyt: and thinks that the verse belongs to the मालविकाग्निमित्र नाटक. While other commentators 40TE (circ. 1612 A. D.) and WATTT attribute this verse to the मालतीमाधव नाटक, and comment accordingly.* पद्मश्री (circ. 1000 A. D.) in his een (aft. . 88.) acknowledges having read Kuttanimatam but urutane (circ. 1617 to 1633 A. D.) its commentator, shows complete ignorance of the poem, fumbles in his commentary, and interprets the word wrongly. Thus we can mark the gradual decrease of the popularity of our poet, but now, as the poem is resurrected, let us hope that our poet will once more have a fitting recognition. (4) His life:-As is usual in the case of ancient poets and other learned men in India, there is no biographical material extant for writing a sketch of life of this great poet. The only external source known to us is Râjatarangiņi, but its author in his whole voluminous writing has only one couplet to say about our poet. स दामोदरगुप्ताख्यं कुटनीमतकारिणम् । कविं कविं बलिरिव धुयं घीसचिवं व्यषात् ॥ ४९६ ॥ From this, all that we krow is that the author of Kuttanymatam was Jayapida's minister. Kalhaņa has no word to say about the parents or children of the poet, about his life, private or public, about his fitness for writing such a poem as Kuttanżmatam or even about the names of the poet's other works. Nor can any important information be gleaned from the poem itself. Only once in the whole poem (in the 2nd verse) he states that the poem Kuttanimatam was composed by himself. The colophone even, which is afa sft Firma Helgusest osa T ertificat cute tharathan softuri FHHH I does not make as any the wiser, in this respect. : Cf. Jhalakíkara's Edition page 768.
