EXPLANATORY NOTES.
185
X, 180. The y of Aindrih has dropped out of the text in all the MSS. Aindrah, however, would not be incorrect if Indra be considered a Rishi, which, as is here pointed out, he may be.
X, 185. P reals arefuata 37 (= a zafuratan 57); P2, 77 paatça 57. This remark is omitted in W1 and I 4, but corresponds to what is said in the comm. to X, 180.
X, 191. Hal ins W 1, P2 (Hati ---Pr; figa I 4); according to this the text should have सांज्ञानं.
P. 167, ver. II. FE AHT etc.: the readings of the MSS. in this line are very corrupt; the conjecture is not violent, and gives a good sense : ‘he will dwell in heaven with the good, and even be worshipped there by them.'
P. 168, ver. 16. HETAN must refer to the sůtra portion of the Aitareya Aranyaka, the Srauta and the Gribya Sûtra being afterwards mentioned as the fifth and the sixth branch of knowledge taught to Shadgurusishya by his six teachers.
ANUVÂKÂNUKRAMANÍ.
Verse 5. TICIETEICA:, 'the length of pari is Vedic,' shows that the text must have read UIHTUA originally.
Verse 9. JATT etc.; this is apparently a quotation from one of the Kosas. For the meanings of JAIT here given, cp. A. Borooah's Grammar of the Sanskrit Language, vol. iii, part i, p. 287; also the Sâsvata Kosa.
Verse 17. This reference to the mention of the Khilas in the Arshậnukramani confirms what Shadg. says in his comm. to Sarv. I, 99.
Verse 18. tatat : cp. Schol. to Pân. III, i, 10. The alternative explanation is that karkâyate is a compound of karka +âyate, loc. sing. of the past participle of â-yam.
Verse 21. The only difference in the order of the Bashkalas is that the hymns of Kutsa (beginning with Få 14) come last but one instead of second.
Verse 35. If the 7 of fu is dropped according to the rule of Bhâguri, the reading would of course be °धिकानि प्यावे. अथो यानीति, the reading of the MSS., makes no sense, and must be a corruption for warfaitaifa, under the influence, perhaps, of the words wit af in the previous line. The only point in which the reading of 'others' differs from that given in the text, is apparently the dropping of gfq altogether.
