COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE SAMJNĀS OF SIDDHĀHAIMA - ŠABDĀNUSAŚNAM WITH THE
PĀNINIAM SCHOOL OF GRAMMAR
BAS
(Dr. Jani Jaydev A. Baroda)
Sri Hemachandrāchārya is rightly called Kalikālasarvajñā, as his contribution to the various fields of Sanskrit language and literature bespeaks his allround scholarship and praiseworthy command over the language.
The present paper confines only to the section of the Samjñās (technical terms) introduced and/or used in Siddha-haima-sabdānuśasanam or Siddha-haimavyākaranam', which consists of eight chapters like the Astādhyāyi of Panini. However there is a slight change of the topic in the eighth chapter, here, which deals with Six languages, other than Sanskrit such as Prakrita, Sauraseni, Māgadhi, Paisāchi, Cūlikāpaiśāchi and Apabhramsa, unlike Panini's Astadhyāyi which deals with the Sanskrit grammar only.
The glaring difference between the two schools of grammar is that Panini touches the grammar of Vedic Sanskrit also, but Sri Hemachandrācharya totally ignores it. Even then there is an undercurrent of similarity between them.
The following points need consideration.
(1) Many of the aphorisms of the Siddha-haima
Sabdānuśāsanam are adopted Verbatim from the
Astādhyāyi of Pāṇini (2) Some of the aphorisms show a minor change in
the structure by way of (a) changing the words or technical terms, (b) curtailing the list with the word ādi, (c) amalgamating Värttikass of Päninian grammer
into the body of the Siddha-haimaŚabdānuśāsanam as forming part of the
aphorisms, and (d) introducing easier technical terms known to
the students and scholars, as some of them
have come down from the Prātiśākhyas. The following is a list of some of the technical terms
worth attention. (A) The technical terms (Samjnās) that are common
in the Siddha-haima-Sabdanusasanam and the Aștādhyāyī.
