________________ 198 JAINISM AND WORLD PROBLEMS It should be noted that the system extracts calory-units from the different elements as follows : from 1 gram of proteid 4.1 calories „ 1 „ fats 9.3 » , 1 carbo hydrates 4.1 , On this basis we get from 120 grains of Albuinen 492 calories , 50 „ „ Fat 465 » 500 , , Carbohydrates 2050 , Total 3007 To-day nobody would recommend so much consumption. It is to be noted that an excess of any of these elements produces disease. Too much fat would lead to excessive heat, an excess of carbolaydrates to a variety of digestive troubles and what is termed Coli in the Indian languages; too much of protein will directly clog the alimentary canal and give rise to constipation. I give here a couple of tables from Dr. Bircher-Benner's valuable work to show how much food is necessary and how easily it is obtained from non-animal products.
