________________ 2. The bahya-mahanagara were four in number: Nagara Rajasima in the east, Tenasserim and Tavoy in the west, Nagara Sri Dharmaraja in the south. A category of provinces that fell between the rajadhani and the surrounding major provinces were ruled by nephews or grandsons of the king. These provinces were also referred to as second class provinces. Incidentally, this rationalized classification persisted well into the nineteenth century until it was abolished by king Rama V.
