The 2600th Mahavir Janma Kalyanak was celebrated on April 6 at Shri Mandir, and included a bhavana by Paresh Shah. Sahil Sanghni, Sparsh Kothari, and Shreya Doshi were the first place winners of an essay competition on Life and the Message of presented a drama on Life of Mahavir - A Journey of the Soul from Ordinary to Divine. The drama directed by Kokila Doshi de picted the theme of Trishaladevi's Dreams, Mahavir's past life as King Tripustha and Gowal, and Janma Abhishek. The skit and the props were provided by YJA. An adult drama entitled Parivartan directed by Rohak Vora emphasized the theme of Asharan Bhavna with a message that only our Karmas come with us. Inspiring pravachanas on Karmavad, Niyati and Purusharth were presented by Shramanji Shrutpragna and Sthitpragna from May 6 9. Regular activities include a monthly Jainshala for children, adult classes, swadhyay by Girishbhai Shah, and a weekly pooja on Saturday at Shri Mandir. Among other initiatives taken were an Inaugural Acharya Sushilkumarji Peace and Non-violence lecture on 'Religion and Warfare', an article in Toronto Star entitled 'Understanding Nonviolence' by Prakash Mody and issuing of 'Picture Postage' Canadian stamp with Jain Symbol. Two books in English were released on this occasion. Jain Vishwa Bharti published 'Economics of Lord Mahavir 'and' Lord Mahavir's Scripture of Health by Acharya Mahaprajna. Shrimad Rajchandraji's Emancipation Centenary Celebrations were concluded and a special bhakti was organized at the Jain Center in April. Jain Society of Toronto participated in Interfaith Universal Peace Festival, as part of 2600th Janmakalyanak Celebrations. The Interfaith event took place at Metro Hall Square in Toronto. Last year, the event attracted over 2000 visitors and 11 faith groups at Nathan Phillips Square in downtown Toronto. Annual General Meeting: This meeting took place on Sunday 22nd April at Jain Center. After presentations of reports from the President, General Secretary and the Treasurer, the work of 'Land Acquisition Committee' was presented. There were many varied points of view voiced and it seemed the audience was not in favor of the report. The next item was 'Consideration of Incorporation and Constitutional Amendments'. The invited speaker, a member of one of the local law firm, explained the advantages of incorporating our Society. Shah is appointed to the newly created Chair of Senior Industrial Research in Computer Process Control at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Alberta, Edmonton. Vikas Jain, 21, recently won the EDCO 2000 Marketing Award of Excellence, an award of distinction for non-traditional pro motion by the Economic Development Council of Ontario (EDCO). Prakash Mody, won the two of the three prizes in the Bhagwan Mahavir Stamp design competition by the Jain Social Group International Federation, Mumbai, India.
