________________ PREFACE The L. D. Institute of Indology has great pleasure in publishing for the first time English translation of Dr. Pt. Sukhlalji's Gujarati work entitled 'Bhāratīya Tattvavidyā! which contains five lectures delivered in the 'Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad Honorarium Lecture Series' under the auspices of M. S. University of Baroda in the year 1957. The first lecture surveys the evolution of philosophical speculation and discusses the subject-matter of philosophy. The second lecture is devoted to the problem of causation. The third lecture is concerned with world or non-conscious element. The fourth and the fifth lectures examine the various views regarding soul and God respectively. Thus the work embodies the essence of Indian philosophy. The treatment of the subject is as lucid as one would wish. The account of Indian philosophical speculation, presented in the work is highly authoritative as it is based on the original texts. Panditji's knowledge of the sources, his bistorical sense, his critical acumen, his comparative method and the soundness of his judgement make him a safe guide in a field in which there are many pitfalls. We are very grateful to Dr. K. K. Dixit for translating Panditji's 'Bhāratiya Tattvavidyā' into English. Being a great scholar of Indian philosophy and well equipped with the knowledge of both the languages, Dr. Dixit has accomplished his task marvellously. We express our sincere gratitude to the Trustees of Jñānodaya Trust for bearing translation expenses. We are particularly grateful to M. S. University of Baroda for giving us permission to publish English translation of 'Bhāratiya Tattvavidyā.' Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
