________________ and accumulating for himself. When the powerful groups of a society get immersed in self-interest, they kick off the social good. A few people holding the reins of authority and property in their hands, let go a majority of the people tossing and tumbling in the ditch of wants. Then the affluent group gets embogged in the intoxication of its powers and the have-nots in the marsh of disparities on account of their helpless destitution, and in this way incongruity secures worship at all the levels in the society. The more the external unevenness accelerates, to that extent internal bitterness awakens, which converts a man into a effigy of incongruity; internally and externally. An accomplisher of Equanimity shall always have to keep vigilance from this maneuver of incongruity and shall have also to save his organization from its baneful effects. This can only be possible when the fundamental goal of an Equanimous Society be kept in mind at every step. Evolution of an Individual and Reformation of Society : An Equanimous society should be that kind of organization which in its view always attaches equal importance on both these aims and equal discretion be exercised of work. An individual and society are so intimately connected in their progress that if any side is neglected then the other side would not remain unaffected. If much stress be laid on an individual's evolution and his social aspect be neglected, then it is possible that some people may reach the summit of development, but the ordinary people will begin to slip down the orbinary ethical level and its general effect in the long run will be that the path of highest individual 198 Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
