________________ ( 20 ) subject to the fluctuations or changes of accidents, i.e., modes. Accidents are of two kinds, namely, svâbhávik (natural) and vibhávik (extraneous). Natural accidents imply the changes of modes that take place in a substance without the intervention of any external agent or cause. The vibhâvik accidents arise in compounds where two or more substances or things existing in a state of combination are concerned. The difference between the two types is that while the svábhárik changes imply no loss, limitation or curtailment of the natural attributes of a substance, the vibhávik are always associated with the idea of qualitative deterioration or change. Vibhavik modes only occur in souls and matter. but not in any other substance. Our passions, emotions, likes, dislikes, loves, hatreds, thoughts, desires, longings, feelings, sensations, and the like, are all vibhâvik in nature. They are not to be found in a pure soul, and arise by virtue of its association with matter. The innumerable changes of form which matter undergoes at different times are, similarly, all vibhavik modes of the different kinds of atoms arising from their ever-renewing, ever-varied combinations and groupings.
