One should seek only that status which is not the abode of any kind of distresses, and compared with which all other positions of dignity are not worth looking at. 70. The one natural state of the intelligent soul is consciousness; all other states, such as attachment and the like, pertain to something else ; for this reason, only consciousness is to be developed and all other states and feelings to be avoided. 71. Not burdened with extraneous modifications, abiding firmly in the soul, constituting a thing in itself in nature, devoid of the spirit of grasping and rejecting, this pure intelligence is seated in its own identity (.e., without being transformed into something else ); having neither beginning, nor end, nor middle, shining in all its natural increasing splendour, and with pure, perfect knowledge as its glory, the Essence of Life is installed as the rising sun ( in its own wonderful nature ). 72.
