BRIEF HISTORY OF JAINISM: TRISHASHTHI SHALAKA PURUSHA CARITRA THE JAIN SAGA - An English translation of Acharya Hemacandra's 'Trishashthi Shalaka Purusha Caritra,By Helen Johnson, Revised by Muni Samvegayashavijaya, English, Set of 3 books,2009 235 x 155 mm 1800 pages, Deluxe Softcover edition in a Slipcase Rs. 1000 for the set.
Acharya Hemacandra is one of the most influential Acaryas of the Jain tradition. He was widely respected not only in the Jain tradition, but also in the Sanskrit world of the 12th century. He is said to have composed 45 million verses. He wrote extensively in Prakrit, Sanskrit, Apabhramsha and Old Gujarati of his works, the most influential are: 'Yogashastra' and 'Trishashthi Shalaka Purusha Caritra'.Both are Sanskrit works, the former focusing on inner development and spiritual nourishment while the latter recounts the hagiographies of the 63 Illustrious Men of the Jain tradition. The 63 Great Men of the Jain tradition are:24 Tirthankaras,12 Cakravartis, 9 Narayanas, 9 Balabhadras, 9 Prati-Narayanas. This telling of the hagiographies of the 63 Great Men is known as the Jain Universal History. There is a rich tradition in the Jain community of writing highly articulate life stories of the 63 Great Men. Acarya Jinasena and Gunabhadra composed the masterly 'Mahapurana' in Sanskrit. This was followed by the Apabhramsha 'Mahapurana' of Acharya Pushpadanta. In this tradition of hagiographies, Hemacandra's 'Trishashthi Shalaka Purusha Caritra' comes third in chronological order but is probably the best known.
Helen Johnson worked hard and composed a very fine translation of Hemacandra's 'Trishashthi Shalaka Purusha Caritra'. This was published some time in the 1940s and has been out of print since then. The present work is a revised edition of Helen Johnson's pioneering work. This work does not have diacritic marks, much to the chagrin of the scholar, but this makes the text easy to read for the common man. For reasons of brevity, the Sanskrit mula patha has not been given. Only the revised English translation has been given. The set of 3 books has been spectacularly printed on acid free paper, bound beautifully and packed in a smart slip case. Available at Hindi Granth Karyalaya, E-Mail: manishymodi@gmail.com
