________________ 34 Ananda, had practised above said eleven Pratimas. The Vratas are practised indenpedently, and at the time of fulfilment of Pratimás also. These Vratās and Pratimās are the two religious codes for an Upāsaka. In the Samawāyānga and the Nandi Sütra, Vrata and Pratimă both are mentioned. The Jayadhawalā gives an account of Pratimäs only. ANTAGADADASÃO The title The present Agama is the eighth of the Dwādaśāngi. The illustrious ones who put an end to the cycle of death and birth, have been narrated in it, and it has ten Adhyayanas. Hence the title 'Antagadadasão". The Samwāyānga tells us that it contained ten Adhyayanas and scven Vargast. The Nandi Sūtra says nothing about its Adhyayanas and only eight Vargas have been accounted for and in it. Sri Abhayadeva Sūri has tried to find consistency in these both. He tells us that the first Varga has ten Adhyayanas, therefore the Samawāyānga Sūtra mentions ten Adhyayanas and seven Vargas only. The Nandi Sūtra gives cight Vargas only with no mention of Adhyayanas'. But this consistency cannot be maintained to the end, because the Samawāyanga gives us ten Siksha-kālas (Uddeśan kālas) of this Agama and the Nandi Sūtra gives only eight. Sri Abhayadeva Suri admits that he does not understand the purpose behind the differcnce in the number of the Uddesankälas. Thc Chūrnikār of the Nandisātra, Sri Jinadas Mahattar and the Vrittikär, Sri Haribhadra Sūri also write that the present Āgama is given the title 'Antagadadasão as it has ton Adhyayanas in the first Vargas. The Churņikār takes the meaning of 'Daśā' as 'Awastha' (condition) also. Threc traditions are found to narrate the present Agama : firstly, that of the sa mawāyānga; secondly, that of the Tatwārtha Vārtika, and thirdly, that of the Nandi Sütra. 1.
