કાવ્ય : ૬ એક અજવાળી રાત્રિ
[O Moon ! the oldest shades' mong oldest trees Feel palpitions when thou lookest in; O Moon! old boughs lisp forth a holies din The while they feel thine airy fellowship. Thou dost bless every where, with silver lip Kissing dead things to life. The sleeping kine, Couched in thy brightness, dream of fields divine: Innumerable mountains, rise, and rise, Ambitious for the hallowing of thine eyes; And yet thy benediction passeth not One obscure hiding place, one little spot Where pleasure may be sent; the nested wren, Has thy fair face within its tranquil ken, And from beneath a sheltering ivy leaf Takes glimpses of thee; thou art a relief To the poor patient oyster, where it sleeps Within its peraly house.

વ્યંગ્યાર્થ-રે પ્રભો જેના રસને વેદ ‘‘સોમ’ ‘ફન્તુ’ નામે સ્તવે છે - તારી દિષ્ટ અન્તરમાં પડતાં, આ જન્મના અનેક સાંસારિક અનુભવો અને લાલસાઓથી ખવાઈ ગયેલા, અરે ! અસંખ્ય જન્મોની માયાજાળથી છવાયેલા જર્જરિત, આત્માઓનાં હૃદયો પણ ઊછળે છે, રે પ્રભો! તારો દિવ્ય સમાગમ થતાં, અત્યંત શુષ્ક અને જીર્ણ થઈ ગયેલી આત્મવૃક્ષની શુભવૃત્તિરૂપી ડાળીઓ પણ પુનઃ ધીમે ધીમે પવિત્ર ધ્વનિ ઉચ્ચારે છે. મૃત વસ્તુઓમાં-ખરો ચિત્તપદાર્થ ખોઈ બેઠેલા જીવોમાં - પણ તારો શ્વેત શુભ્ર સત્ત્વગુણમય પ્રકાશ અને પ્રેમમય ચુંબન અલૌકિક ચૈતન્ય પ્રેરે છે. આ ઈન્દ્રિયરૂપી ગાયો, તારા પ્રેમની ચંદ્રિકામાં વીંટાયેલી, ઊંઘમાં પણ-આ સંસારનિદ્રામાં પણ દિવ્ય ક્ષેત્રોનાં સ્વપ્નાં અનુભવે છે. અસંખ્ય મહાત્માઓરૂપી ગિરિવરો તારા દૃષ્ટિપાતથી પવિત્ર થવા મોટી મોટી આકાંક્ષાભર્યા ઊભા રહે છે. અને તે છતાં, એક અલ્પમાં અલ્પ માનસગુહા, તારા આનંદથી સીંચવા જોગ એક
