This is the progress of the layman to Moksha. Now a few words about asceticism, which The Jain comes after the eleventh stage of laymanship. An ascetic has to possess twenty-eight Primary Qualities, namely, the five great Vows [the Anuvritas in a stricter form, the five Samitis, the six necessaries beginning with Samayika, abandonment of the objects of the five seness, throwing off clothes, drawing out the hair with one's own hands, one meal a day, standing up while taking his meal, eating the food taken only in the palms of the hands, non-bathing and non-rubbing of the teeth.
