FOREWORD
Since the medieval times a continuing tradition, vigorous at least till the last century, has been to get manuscripts of the Kalpa Sutra (containing the life of Lord Mahavira and to a lesser extent of the other Tirthankaras) made and distributed for the spiritual welfare of monks and laity. The State Level Committee set up about two years ago in Rajasthan to celebrate the 2500th Nirvan year of Lord Mahavira, thought that it would be a fit tribute to him to emulate this tradition. Hence this edition of the Kalpa Sutra with the original text in Prakrit and translations in Hindi and English. The coloured reproductions of the original Jain paintings about 470 years old, have also been provided. I hope that all those who value the life and philosophy of Lord Mahavira and have interest in Jain art will welcome this work.
