बीस सागरोपम की पाय, भव और स्थिति का क्षय होने के पश्चात् च्युत हुए। च्युत होकर इसी जम्बूद्वीपस्थ भारतवर्ष [दक्षिणार्द्ध भरत] में इसी अवसर्पिणी काल के सुषम-सुषम १, सुषम २, सुषम-दुःषम ३ नामक तीनों पारों के व्यतीत हो जाने, दुःषम सुषम नामक चौथे प्रारक [जो कि बयालीस हजार वर्ष न्यून एक कोटाकोटि सागरोपम का है] के भी अधिकांशतः व्यतीत हो चुकने, इस चौथे पारे के केवल पचहत्तर वर्ष और साढे पाठ मास शेष रह जाने तथा इस से पूर्व इक्ष्वाकु कुल में उत्पन्न काश्यप गोत्रीय २१ तीर्थंकरों और हरिवंश कुल में उत्पन्न गौतम गोत्रीय २ तीर्थंकरों, इस प्रकार २३ तीर्थंकरों के हो जाने पर, "श्रमण भगवान् महावीर अन्तिम तीर्थकर होंगे" ऐसा पूर्व में हुए तीर्थंकर द्वारा निर्दिष्ट भगवान् महावीर का जीव

He was conceived unto the womb of Devananda,a brāhamana woman of Jalandhara gotra. She was the wife of Rşabhadatta, a brāhmawa of the Ikşvāku clan and Kodala gotra, who lived in the brahmana sector of the town of Kundagrāma. At the time of his conception, the cycle of ages had taken more than half a turn. The six-phased wheel of time had completely traversed three phases, namely, susama-susama, susama, susama-duhşama, and was nearing the end of the the present fourth phase, the duhşama-sugama, which has a span of forty-two thousand years less than a kodakodi sigara. Only seventy-five years, eight-and-a-half months remained for its completion. Bhagvan Mahāvira was preceded by twenty-three Tirthankars, who had all prophecied his coming. Twenty one of these past Tirthaikaras were born in the lkswiku clan and were of the Kisyapa gotra; two were born in the Harivanitsa clan and were of the Gotama gotra.
