To his parents he was Vardhamāna. He was called Sramapa, because he was always tranquil and blissful. The gods named him Mahavira, because he was always steadfast, even in the midst of fear or terror: he could stoically bear all sufferings and calamities and could endure the rigours of ascetic life; he was gifted with a penetrating intellect; he remained equanimous in joy or sorrow and was sublimely heroic and totally self-restrained.

नाम इस प्रकार कहे जाते हैं :-१. माता-पिता ने उनका नाम "बर्द्धमान" रखा। २. स्वकीय विशद बद्धि से कठिन परिश्रम करने के कारण 'धमण' कहलाये। ३. भय-भैरव के उत्पन्न होने पर भी अचल रहने वाले, परीषह और उपसर्गों को शान्ति और क्षमा से सहन करने में समर्थ, [भिक्षुक-प्रतिमाओं का पालन करने वाले] बुद्धिमान, प्रिय और अप्रिय में समभावी, संयमयुक्त
और अतुल पराक्रमी होने के कारण देवताओं ने 'श्रमण भगवान् महावीर' नाम रखा। १०५. श्रमण भगवान महावीर के पिता काश्यप गोत्र के थे। उनके तीन नाम इस प्रकार कहे जाते हैं :- १. सिद्धार्थ, २. थेयांस और ३. यशस्विन् । १०६, श्रमण भगवान महावीर की माता वाशिष्ठ गोत्र की थी। उसके तीन नाम इस प्रकार कहे जाते हैं :१. त्रिशला, २. विदेहदिन्ना और ३. प्रियकारिणी। १०७. धमण भगवान् महावीर के चाचा का नाम सुपार्श्व, ज्येष्ठ भ्राता का नाम नन्दिवर्धन, वहिन का। नाम सूदर्शना और भार्या का नाम यशोदा था। यशोदा कौण्डिन्य गोत्र की थी।

106. Bhagavān Mahavira's mother was of Vasistha gotra. She too had three names : Trisala, Videhadatta and Priyakariņi. 107 to 109. Bhagavan Mahavira's paternal uncle was Supārsva, his elder brother was Nandivardhana and his sister was Sudarsana. His wife was Yasoda of the Kaundinya gotra.
