"पहले भी, हे देवानप्रियो ! जब यह बालक गर्भ में पाया तब (उस समय) हमारे हृदय में इस प्रकार का चिन्तन-विचार यावत् मनोगत संकल्प उत्पन्न हुआ था कि जिस दिन से हमारा यह पुत्र गर्भ में आया उस दिन से हमारी रजत और स्वर्ण से वृद्धि होने लगी है, यावत् । प्रीति और सत्कार की दृष्टि से भी अत्यधिक अभिवृद्धि होने लगी है तथा सामन्त एवं राजागण भी हमारे वश में हुए हैं । अतएव जव हमारा यह पुत्र जन्म लेगा तब हम उसके अनुरूप गुणों का अनुसरण करने वाला, गुरणनिष्पन्न "वर्द्धमान" नाम रखेंगे । तो, आज हमारे मनोरथ सफल हए हैं ।अतः हमारे इस कुमार का नाम बर्द्धमान हो, वर्द्धमान हो।" पश्चात् श्रमण भगवान महावीर के मातापिता ने कुमार का "वर्द्धमान" नामकरण किया। १०४. श्रमण भगवान महावीर काश्यप गोत्र के थे। उनके तीन

"It had so happened, O beloved of gods, that when our son had come into the womb, we had thus reflected and thus resolved : "ever since our son has come into the womb we have increased in every way : in wealth, in honour, in power and in happiness. Let us, therefore, resolve to name our son Vardhamana (the Increasing One), because this name is worthy of him and is appropriate to the qualities he has manifested. So we shall now name him Vardhamāna."
104. Sramaya Bhagavān Mahavira was of the Kāśyapa gotra. He was known by three names.
