Jīvattḥāṇaṃ in Chhakkhaṇḍāgama
[1, 2, 17] The number of Jain spiritual stages (śreṇī) in the universe is innumerable, and they are infinitesimal compared to the universe. The width (vikkhambha-sūcī) of these spiritual stages is equal to the square root of the first power of the finger-breadth (aṃgula-varga-mūla) multiplied by the square root of the second power of the same. [17]
Now, to explain the measure of Sāsādana-samyag-dṛṣṭi and other types of Jīvas, the next sūtra states:
Sāsaṇasammaihippahuḍi jāva asaṃjadasammaihi ti dravvapamāṇeṇa kevaḍiyā? Oghaṃ. [18]
The Jīvas from the stage of Sāsādana-samyag-dṛṣṭi up to Asaṃjata-samyag-dṛṣṭi, what is their measure in terms of substance (dravya)? They are like the Ogha, i.e., they are an infinitesimal fraction of the Patyopama (comparison with a boat) analogy. [18]
Now, to explain the measure of Jīvas in the first Pṛthivī (earth), the next sūtra states:
Evaṃ paḍhamāe puḍhavīe ṇeraiā. [19]
Similarly, the measure of Nāraka (hell-beings) in the first Pṛthivī should be understood. [19]
Further, the measure of Mithyādṛṣṭi Jīvas in the remaining Pṛthivīs is stated:
Viḍiyādi jāva sattamāe puḍhavīe ṇeraiese micchāiṭṭhī dravvapamāṇeṇa kevaḍiyā? Asaṃkhejjā. [20]
The Mithyādṛṣṭi Jīvas in the second Pṛthivī up to the seventh Pṛthivī, what is their measure in terms of substance? They are innumerable. [20]
Their measure in terms of time is then explained:
Asaṃkhejjāsaṃkhejjāhi osappinī-ussappinīhi avahiraṃti kāleṇa. [21]
They are destroyed (avahiraṃti) by innumerable cycles of Avasarpiṇī and Utsarpiṇī in terms of time. [21]
The meaning of this sūtra should be understood similar to the sūtra that explained the measure of general Nāraka Mithyādṛṣṭi Jīvas.
Now, the next sūtra proceeds to explain the measure of subtle spatial extent (kṣetra-pramāṇa) using both substance (dravya) and time (kāla) measures.
