अनेकान्त/54-1 pocececocopacopopecececececodedecese में घाव लगने के कारण लज्जावश आत्महत्या कर ली।" यह राजा उदियन चेर लातन था। इस शासक के संबंध में उसके शत्रु राजा के कवि ने उसके बारे में लिखा था, "Is not he (cher king) nobler than three (Chol Karikal) who ashamed of the wound on his back, starves without food to gain glorious death?' अपना अंत समय निकट जान कर अन्न-जल का त्याग करना जैन परम्परा में सल्लेखना धारण करना कहलाता है। कवि ने इसी सल्लेखना की प्रशंसा की है। उदियन ने उसे धारण किया था न कि आत्महत्या की थी। तमिल में सल्लेखना को वडक्किरुत्तल कहते हैं। दूसरी सदी में हुए युवराजपाद इलेगो इडिगल (शलप्पदिकारम नामक महाकाव्य में जैन श्राविका कण्णगी और उसके पति कोवलन की अमर प्रेम गाथ के महाकवि) भी जैन आचार्य थे।
इस वंश के चेर काप्पियन के लिए निर्मित शैल शय्या आज भी पुगलूर में (तमिलनाडु) है।
कलभ्र शासक - ईसा की तीसरी से पांचवीं सदी का केरल सहित तमिलनाडु का इतिहास अंधकारपूर्ण (histoncal night) माना जाता है अर्थात् उस काल का कोई इतिहास नहीं मिलता। इतना लिखा मिलता है कि कलभ्र शासक 'कलि अरसन' यानी कलि काल में सभ्यता के शत्रु थे। श्री शर्मा ने पृ. 225 पर लिखा है, "कालाभ्रों को दुष्ट राजा कहा गया है। उन्होंने अनेकानेक राजाओं को उखाड़ फेंका और तमिलनाडु पर अपना कब्जा जमा लिया। उन्होंने बहुत-सारे गांवों में ब्राह्मणों को मिले ब्रह्मदेयं अधिकारों को खत्म कर दिया। लगता है कि कालाभ्र बौद्ध धर्म के अनुयायी थे।" वास्तव में, कलभ्र जैन थे। कुछ लोग उन्हें कर्नाटक से आए बताते हैं। रामास्वामी अयंगार का मत है, "it looks as thought the Jains had themselves invited the Kalabhras to establish Jainism more firmly in the country. The period of the Kalabhras and that which succeeds it must, therefore, be considered as the period when the Jains had reachered their zenith. It was during this period that the famous Naladiyar (collection of didagctical poems by Jain asetics) was composed by the Jains There are two references in Naladiyar to Muttaraiyar (lords of pearls) indicating that the
