nor even the specific property is unaccompanied with it ( general property ). 5
Naigama (TA=a + a + The Three AA. T = not, - one, TH = aspect, view, standpoint ) means that which does not consider (only) one aspect, that is, which regards both Sàmânya and Vishesha, This aspect of Naigama is true because Samanya is not irrelative of Vishesha and vice versa. In the third verse we saw that all objects are possessed of both general and specific properties, 5 THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE COLLECTIVE (SANGRAHA) NAYA
--STANDPOINT. संग्रहो मन्यते वस्तु सामान्यात्मकमेवाहि ।
सामान्यव्यतिरिक्तोऽस्ति न विशेषः खपुष्पवत ॥ ६ ॥ T'he collective ( Sangraha) considers an object as possessing, only the general properties. This view of Sangraha is also right, because there exists no Vishesha apart from Samanya i. e, both Vishesha and Samanya are co-existing, coincident, like flower and space i. e. where there is flower, there is space, where there is space, there is flower. But Samanya devoid of Vishesha 'is khapushpavat (like sky-flower), quite nonentity-'no where '. 6 SANGRAHA ILLUSTRATED, OR INSTANCES OF THE COLLECTIVE
STANDPOINT. विना वनस्पति कोऽपि निम्बाम्रादिर्न दृश्यते । ।
हस्ताद्यन्त विन्यो हि नाङ्गुलाद्यास्ततः पृथक् ॥ ७ ॥ Not a single nimb, mango or any other tree is conceived apart from (its general property) • Vegecable-ness'.( This mango tree and this nimb cres and this oak trze and all other trees and plants give us the common idea of their being 'Vegetables'. As trees and plants they are different, but they are all alike. Veger tables', the common property of végetableness is running alike through all of them.) In the same way fingers etc. which are included in the idea of hands etc. cannot be corceived of sefarately from the hands etc. 7.
