________________ " 254 Shri Jain Conference Herald. 3o Naya Philosophy. * Elementary. NAYA means a standpoint or an aspect of viewing a thing from that stand-point or aspect. According to Shreemat Siddhasena Deevakar, there are as many Nayas as there are words, and this statement is borne out by the fact that each word has to express something of an object. There are innumerable words and thus there are innumerable Nayas. Two PRINCIPAL NAYAS OR ASPECTS OF THINGS, DRAVYARTHIKA AND PARYAYARTHIKA. But Jaina Philosophers viewed the Universe with two principal aspects, viz (1) Dravyarthika Naya or an aspect which considers the common attributes or qualities, of all the Dravyas or objects of the Universe, and recognizes the real as well as the attributed state of things; and (2) Paryayarthika Naya or an aspect which considers the specific attributes or qualities of each Dravya or object and recognizes only the real natural state of the thing. THE SEVEN NAYAS. These Dravyarthika and Paryayarthika Nayas are divid. ed into seven other Nayas, viz (1) Naigama Naya, (2) Sangraha Naya (3) Vyavahara Naya (4) Riju-Sootra Naya (5) Shabda Naya (6)Samabhiroodha Naya and (7)Evambhoota Naya. The first four constitute the Dravyarthika Naya, and the rest three the Paryayarthika.
