The first and best sort of Gurus follow the tenets of Jeeneshvara,) one who has conquered passions, love and hatred, who is a liberated soul with all his innate powers, knowledge, perception &c. developed in full bloom never to varish or to be dim). They preach and lead a righttous life, are above passions and worldly desires, ever on their alert with a keen eye to their final emancipation and that of others who resort to them. Paper-like and stone-like Gurus instead of destroying Karmas add to or renew them. We all claim to seek the best and one can expect the best from the best only. If our spiritual guide is the best, he can in the vessel of pure religio o like a competent captain and helms-man carry is across the ocean of Sansara to the coast of liberation. One can not realize without the aid of the best preceptor the truths of philosophy, the secrets of Self' the laws of nature, governing the universe, and the good or bad of Sansara. One would feel curious to know the characteristic features of such Gurus.
They know the order of Jeeneshvara, follow and preach it to others disinterestedly and actuated by compassion. They keep aloof from geld ( money, 'property ) and woman. They take pure food and drink. ( animal food and even vegetable food tending to raise carnel. desires, such as onions &c, spirituous liquors, intoxicating drugs, poisons &c are food and drink forbidden as impure ). They endure privations mental or physical with patience and forbearance. They curb passions, master the mind and do not allow it to master them. Selfrestraint and Self-denial is their watchword. They keep themselves aloof from 'Beginnings'-doing any action tending to injure 'Life'. They absorb theniselves in reading and ex pounding scriptures. They nourish and cover the body, so that they can turn the short life to the best account, to the benefit of the Soul by leading a pious, noble and exemplary life, by preaching the right path and thus evolving and developing the in nate powers of Self'. They are never wearied
