Divetia do not explain anywhere what led the learned author to twist the facts set out in the original and substitute Jains as the perpetrators of the cruelties rather than the fireworshippers. Hereto annexed and market “B” is a copy of the trars'ation of Jame-ul-Hikayet.
The learned author furthermore depicts the said Jain minister Udayan to be running after and harassing a Brahmin girl a creature of his own fancy and has thereby tried his best to lower the character of Udayan for which history gives no record. Mr. Munshi has described his novels as historical novels. We annex an extract marked "C" from the critical and learned introduction to the book Mayanalladevi or “ Gujerat-ni-mata" by Mr. N. V. Thakkur to show how misleading this description is. This extract will further show in what estimate Mr. Munshi's novels are held amongst the literary class.
We may mention that as soon as it was known that an attempt was made to introduce Mr. Munshi's rovels in the University curriculum, we carried on correspondence with the University Registrar. We regret that our attention was not diawn by the Registrar that we should separately address your Board in the matter; otherwise we would have pointed out our objections to the Board before the said book was prescribed. On coming to know from the Secretary of your Board that the first 200 pages of "Gujerat-no-Nath" have been prescribed for the S. L. Examina. tion 1928, we have requested the secretary of your Board to place the correspondence carried on by us with him as Registrar of the Bombay University before your Board. Hereto annexed and marked "D" is a copy of our letter dated 29th April 1927 addressed to the Secretary S. L. Examination Board.
From the correspondence passed between us and the Registrar you will see that we wrote to the Registrar of the Bomby University as far back as 7th March 1927 with a request to him to place our objections before the proper authorities. You will please further note that the Board sanctioned Mr. Munshi's book on 20th March 1927, after our objection as sent to the Registrar of the Bombay University.
The feeling of the Jain Community are very strong all over India and resolutions have been passed in public meetings not only in Bombay but in other towns and cities such as Ahmedbad, Surat, Bhavnagar, Cambay, Dhulia, Songadh Ambala etc; and reports thereof have appeared in ernacular papers in Bombay.
