ગોઠવી છે. અત્યારે આપણે પ્રશ્ન તો એ છે કે પોતાના આદર્શનગર--Republicના સંદર્ભમાં કવિઓ વિષે કેટલાંક ટીકાત્મક વિધાન લેટોએ કર્યા છે, જે રાજશેખરના ઉધૂત કાવ્યવિરુદ્ધના આક્ષેપ સાથે તુલનામાં મૂકવા જેવાં છે. અસહ્યામિત્રતનોઇડ્યે શમ્ અરમ્યાfમધચિત્રા નો #ાવ્ય૬ અને ગત્ નથમિષાયિત્વાત...એમ ત્રણ કારણોસર પદેyવ્યું કાવ્યું એમ કહ્યા પછી રાજશેખર પોતે જ આ ત્રણેય આરોપોનું ખંડન કરે છે. અહીં પ્લેટ પિતાના કપેલા આદર્શનગરમાં કવિઓનું સ્થાન શું તેની વિચારણા કરતાં કવિઓ વિષે જે ધસાતાં વિધાને કરે છે તેને પ્રત્યુત્તર તે આપણે તેના શિષ્ય, એરિસ્ટોટલની કાવ્યવિષયક વિચારણામાં શોધવાના છે. પ્લેટનું મુખ્ય પ્રતિપાદન એ છે કે કવિઓનું સન્માન કરવું, પરંતુ તેમને આદર્શ નગરમાં પેસવા દેવા નહીં, Republic IIIમાં તેનું વિધાન છે કે
"And therefore when any one of these pantomimic gentlemen...comes to us, and makes a proposal to exhibit, himself and his poetry, we will fall down and worship him as a sweet and holy and wonderful being; but we must also inform him, that in our state such as he are not permitted to exist; the law will not allow him."
આનું કારણ, વિમસટ અને બૂકસના શબ્દોમાં જોઈએ તે–
"Poetry “feeds and waters the passions creating division and unsteadiness in the heart, or frivolous laughter, and producing the opposite of civic virtue.” (Literary Criticism, 41.10 )
દેખીતી રીતે જ આ આરોપને ભાવ “અસત્ અર્થનું અભિધાન” છે. બટું શીખવે અને સાચું તથા વાસ્તવિક ઝૂંટવી લે અથવા તેના પર વિપરીત પ્રભાવ પાડે એવી પરિસ્થિતિ પ્લેટોને માન્ય નથી. આ જ વાતને વિસ્તારીને કહી શકાય કે કવિ અને દાર્શનિક વચ્ચેના સનાતક ઝગડા તરીકે સ્વીકારીને કવિતાના વાસનામય, મૃદુતા લાવી દેતા અને અનીતિમય પ્રભાવ તરફ દાર્શનિકો ધ્યાન દોરે તો તેમાં કશું આશ્ચર્ય નથી. પોતે કપેલા આદર્શ નગરના યુવાનનાં મનને નિર્બળ, ક્ષુલ્લક વાસનામય બનાવે એવાં કાવ્યો અને તેના રચનારા કવિઓને પ્લેટ તિરસ્કાર કરે તે તેની દૃષ્ટિએ સાચું છે. વિમસાટબુકસ ગ્ય જ કહે છે કે
“ The quarrel between the poet and the philosopher is the deep end of the quarrel between the poet and the moralist. If poetry produces immoral results, this happens not without certain causes in the nature of poetry itself.
