Editorial ऐतिह्ये दृढलब्धवस्तुनि पुरातत्त्वकृतिग्रन्थिले ।
शास्त्रेऽस्मिन् वा संविधातरि सम लीलायते भारती ॥ It gives us great pleasure to publish the special issue of our quarterly Journal Pathik on 'The Eminent Historians and Archaeologists of Gujarat'. The issue includes various articles on the distinguished scholars of eminence in the field of History, Culture and Archaeology of Gujarat. We have also included the articles on leading Archaeologists who hailed from outside the Gujarat region but made this land their field of research,
Archaeology is a complement of history and hence bears closest relation with history. No modern historian can neglect archaeology if he is to pursue the study of history not as a record of wars and the story of kings but as the organized knowledge of the development of human civilization. In a way archaeology has revolutionized history. It has enlarged the spatial horizon of history in much the same degree as the telescope enlarged astronomy's vision of space.
The great scholars of history and Archaeology of Gujarat have played a significant role in illuminating the through researches in these fields and their investigations have opened up rich stores of material for the reconstruction of the history of our nation. They will be the milestones in the elucidation of the History and Archaeology of Gujarat for years to come.
The publication of this valuable special issue of Pathik became possible due to the publication grant sanctioned by the department of Archaeology, Gujarat State.
We take this opportunity to thank various scholars and writers who have contributed their leamed articles in English and Gujarati for this special issue. We also acknowledge our sincere thanks to Dr. Nirmala Sharma for designing the cover page for this issue and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for providing us the photographs of Dholavira. Last but not the least we thank the Organizers of Krishna Graphics who have given us untiring services for the publication.
