________________ of Gośāta Movement. COW PROTECTION - EVOLUTION AS A VALUE While other nations opted for speed by choosing horse as their chief companion. India in her hoary past preferred for stability and balanced order by choosing cow as life-companion, modus vivendi elmodus operandi, since then cow has been synonymous with India's Life order. And the culture of a nation is truly rooted in its agriculture. Thus protection of cow meaning Gośātas Movement has verified the protection of India's life order and heritage. SACRED COW TRULY SACRED ? Many people brought up under Western Influence refer to India's cows as "sacred" cow. But this showes only their ignorance about the condition of life in India. Mr. Philip Staph writes in the January - 1972, issue of the "Prabudha Bharat" (99& HRG) a journal of the Ram Krishna Mission: "We Americans are prone to call countries with civilisation far older than our as emerging countries. We are quick to speak disdainfully of India's cow worship, never bothering to enquire into the role which cow played in India's religion and economy, giving not only milk, but dung for manuring and fuel. "Sacred" as Gandhi said, because the cow has been a useful and gentle companion for centuries. Nor do most Americans stop to think how we cuddle and pamper our dogs. Feeding them coupiously, so the television advertisement are devoted to touting tempting dog foods. Nor would any American dream of eating the flesh of a dog". Monier Williams, whose work on the Veda is very famous, writes in his book "One Hinduism" — "Fortunately for the people of India, Cows, which give milk, the only animal - protein and ghee, and bullocks which plough their land. were declared "Sacred" in the very beginning. Had it not been done, cows and bullocks would have disappeared during the famines (i.e. they would have been eaten up by the starving people - ed) what is found today as blind faith, was in fact a far-sighted wisdom". PARTIAL BAN ON CATTLE SLAUGHTER IS MEANINGLESS A question commonly asked, “But why not slaughter the old and decrepit cattle?' Because this is simply not practicable in the Indian conditions. Meat from the old animals is not fit for man's consumption. Therefore young and useful alone are slaughtered, of courses under the plea of being old and useless. In west, cow is a dual purpose animal i.e. for supplying beef and milk. So in their case to trouble arises in slaughter. In India, however, cow is a far- animal for milk and draught. Cattle in India were never meant for supplying meat. If this objective is added to cattle farming, all restriction over their slaughter Arhat Vacana, Oct. 99 59
