India, a tropical country has fast depleting water resources, while mechanised farming (as well as the modern industrialism) consumes too much of water. According to the National water Resources Commission, Water resources of India were 74% in 1940 and came down in 1980, to 33% of what they had been in 1901, and by 2001 A.D. they will be just 14 as the trend goes.
EINSTEIN'S MESSAGE TO INDIA Dr. Albert Einstein in his message to the people of India had said in 1948, "India should not go for mechanised farming. Soil in the U.S.A. has lost much of its fertility within a span of just three hundred years whereas India's soil retains its fertlility till today, even though farming has been going on, since past ten thousand years. Tractors ploughing and use of fertliisers will bring in loss of fertility, eventually causing incalculable and irreparable harm to the country".
India, with 16% of the world population, has only 0.3% of the estimated total oil - reserves in the earth, while U.S.A. with only 5% of the population, is in a position to use 33% of the mineral oils power in the world. In India's agricultural operations, animal power constitues 66% manual labour, i.e. Manpower 20% and fossiled resources 14%. Replacing all animal power with oil-energy (and that resulting in the minimum use of manual power as the logical consequence) will entail colosol amount of fund as even today India has to spend over Rs. 3500/- crore annually for oil imports and with trade deficits occuring annually to the tune of more than Rs. 7000/- crores and debt - service burden taking away 30% of the export earnings.
With the discovery of Gobar-gas, India's cattle, (besides giving their usual draught-power) are capable of supplying gas energy on mass scale India's total dung output is estimated at 980 M. Tonnes. If harnessed, can yield 35,260 Metric Cubic feet of gas- sufficient for the needs of 88 Million families.
Mr. Jimmy Carter, the former U.S.A. president exclaimed, as he saw a gobar-gas plant in India, "Oh, it is a perennial source of energy"
