Indira Gandhi, the Late Prime Minister of India had, on the occassion of the International Conference of Energy at Nairobi in 1981 said, "In this jet age, people refer to bullock - carts as symbols of past, However, in India, animals provide more power than all our power houses, whose installed capacity is 22,000/- Mw. Replacing them would entail a further investment of 25-40 billion dollaras in electricity, over and above the loss to farm economy of manure and cheap fuel". It is not a tragic irony that the above expression were not translated into action in Govt. Policy to ban slaughter of cow and bullocks? Our great Political Saint Vinobaji had to sacrifice his life by fasting upto death to stop the slaughter of Cow - Progeny. BULLOCK CART : KEY ROLE Now let us talk about Rural Transport System. That the bullock cart plays a key role in transporting men and material within villages and from villages to villages and towns is today conceded even by those who talk of mechanisation of rural transport seeing our roads. Thanks to the oil crisis and the unprecedented fuel shortages faces by the world, it increasingly being recognised that there is no other mode of cheaper transport to replace the bullock -cart in the near future. Lacs of villages are dependent on the bull . cart for their daily needs. In spite of the development of a wide networn rail and road transport in the country, considerable rural areas still depend on the bullock cart for both passenger and goods transport. The bullock cart is a rural institution and it will be futile to think of replacing it in the foreseable future.
