________________ १५३ The Brāhmaṇa requests Muni Ārdrakumara to follow the Vedic - religion. He says that as a result of feeding two thousand Brāhmaṇas who practise their six duties studying, teaching etc. one achieves virtue (punya) and goes to heaven. But Ardrakumāra refutes his idea and says that what to talk of two thousand Brāhamaņas, feeding even one Brāhamana who takes meat causes suffering in too torturous hell. Here Jayācārya says that Ardrakumāra has not accepted the Brāhmaṇa's idea because it is against religious conduct to feed Asanyati. But Jawahiralälaji while refuting Jayācāryā's interpretation of Ārdrakumärás saying asserts that Ardrakumara has prohibited the giving of charity to the Brāhmaṇas who praise the violence based religion and condemn the non-violence based religion, not the charity given due to kindness (Anukampādāna) In this way, it may be concluded that the act of giving charity to poor and needy fellows, on the basis of kindness (Anukampādāna) is virtuous and worthy to be practised. Dāna according to Gaņādhipati Tulasi Ganādhipati Tulasi a Jaina saint and philosopher of world fame and the 9th ācarya of Terāpantha sect has expressed his valuable views concerning charity in the following way - a) To provide bread and water to somebody is not a charity but a social co-operation. A true charity is to make that man wise who is not wise.22 b) To feel pride as a result of offering unnecessary and rotten things to somebody is to lower the justification of charity.23 c) To offer money as charity to somebody, in order to be free from the sin resulted the earning of wealth through unjustified and improper means, is nothing but the mockery of charity.24 d) The purity of all three - liberal person, things to be given as charity and the person who takes charity - causes the achievement of benefit of true charity.25 e) The person who has abandoned willingly all things is worthy to take charity.26 Preaching and Teaching of Religious Ideas Religion and Non-violence are in very close contact with each other as we have seen in the beginning. Actually, without non-violence there
