________________ १५२ 1. Adoption of Religious Vows by Gāthāpati Ananda - There is a statement by Gāthāpati Ananda, while he adopts 5 Anuvratas and 7 Śiksāvratas, in the 1s Adhyayana of Upāsakadaśāngasūtra. In his acceptance of different virtues he asserts that he will offer prescribed and pure seats, drinks, food etc. to śramana - Nirgranthas i.e. Jaina ascetics. As Jayācārya has interpreted this statement, Ananda has refused to give any charity to poor and needy, because he has mentioned only Nirgranthas in his statement. But Jawāhiralalji in Saddharmamandanam, while refuting Jayācārya's view, says that Ananda has refused only to give charity to those who follow the religion which is not established by the omniscient and also who is not wise. He has not negated to give charity to poor persons on the basis of kindness. So charity must be given to the poor and the sufferers. 2. Lord Mahāvira - Gautama Swami - Discussion - According to Jayācārya, charity should not be given to those who are religiously not worthy to take that (Asanyati). If done, it results into sin. He, in order to strengthen his opinion, presents the Mahāvīra - Gautama discussion found in the Bhagawatisūtra. Mahāvīra, while answering Gautama's question concerning charity, assigns that charity should not be given to Asanyati, because it causes sin not Nirjarā (End of karma). But Jawahirlalji with a view to refuting Jayacāryaś theory says that though theoretically (on the basis of Gurubuddhi)giving charity to Asanyati has been prohibited, offering charity to the poor people as a result of kindness has not been negated. 3. Adoption of religious vows by Rājāpradeśi - In Rājāpraśniya there is a statement of Rājāpradeśīs adoption of religious vows. Rājāpradeśī like Gāthāpati Ananda adopts 12 religious vows and he also makes up his mind to give charity to poor and needy people. He conveys his proposal to Keśīkumara who keeps silence. Here Jayācārya, with a view to supporting his own theory, has interpreted the silence maintained by Keśikumara as the negation of giving charity to poor persons. But Jawāhirlālji says that in the case of giving charity to poor being the cause of sin, Keśikumara shuld have prohibited Rājāpradeśī from offering charity to sufferers. But he has not done so, that's why giving charity to needy persons should not be considered as the cause of sin. 4. Muni Ārdrakumāra and Karmakāndi Brāhmaṇa - In the Sūtrakịtănga there is a talk between Muni Ardrakumāra and a Brāhmaṇa.
