________________ श्रमण/जुलाई-सितम्बर / १९९६ : Dhātrī, Cūrṇā etc. Different from that of 57 mātrās include Udgāthā, Gāhū, Gahini etc. Metre -wise break up of the Niryukti gatha may be given as follows ६५ Buddhi-1, Lajjā 3, Vidya-11, Kṣamā-9, Dehī-28, Gauri-22, Dhātrī-22, Cūrṇā 15, Chayâ-8, Kanti-3, Māhāmāyā-2, and Udgāthā6. Remaining gathās are composed in Gāhū, Gähinī etc. Metrical analysis of these gathās indicate that 44 gathās of Niryukti are correct in measure in status quo. Similarly, shortening of the last long vowels and vice-versa is required to adjust the metre in eleven's and fourteen' of its gathās respectively. It may be noted here that according to the poetic convention, short letters may be pronounced, as long and vice-versa to adjust the metre. Thus half (44+25) out of the 140 gāthās are, correct metrically in status quo. Now turning to the incorrect gāthās, we find that 181 of its gāthās require the addition of supplement particles (Nipātas)- Tu, To, Khu, Hi, Va, Vā, Ca etc. including other Prākṛta forms also, to adjust their measure. These usages are meant for the filling out of the verse. Again the 1318 gāthās of Niryukti, requisite just only the adding and deliting of nasal, respectively as per the declensions of Prakṛta, to adjust their metres. Such as: Näṇatthi>Näṇatthi Caraṇesu>Caraṇesum (24), Duggesu>Duggesuṁ (31). Bhikhūṇa>Bhikkhūņaṁ (40), Teṇa> Tenam (65), Mottūṇa>Mottunaṁ (75), Iyaresu>lyaresum (76), Vāsāsu>Vāsāsurf (85), Mottu>Mottum (86), Vatthesu>Vatthesum (102), Gahana>Gahaṇam (106), Khaṇa>Khaṇaṁ (106), Ṇāu>Ṇauṁ (112), Anubhavaṇa> Anubhavanam (129), Ayāti>Āyātiṁ (141) Jain Education International Likewise, 11 gathās-19 may be adjusted by lengthening of short vowels and vice-versa, respectively in tune with Prākṛta grammar or more precisely Prākṛta declensions. For example : Aṇimtassä>Aṇimtassa (70), Kāīya>Kāiya (71), No>Ṇa (103), (115) and (119), To>tu (127). For Private & Personal Use Only www.jainelibrary.org
