The topics dealt in Daśāśrutaskandha Niryukti, are classified in accordance with the Sūtra text (Daśāśrutaskandha), and thus it also contains ten chapters (Adhyayanas) viz. Asamadhi, Sabala, Āśātanā, Ganigunaśreni, Upāsaka Pratimă, Bhikṣu Pratimā, Paryusaņākalpa, Moha and lastly Nidāna. Coming to the counterparts and direct parallels, those of a considerable number of gathas of this Niryukti are available in Jaina texts : Svetambera as well as Digambara. However, it is notable that its parallels are found in plenty or in many instances, in śvetambera Jaina texts, while in Digambara Jaina literature it is almost an oddity.
The variations among the parallel or parallels of a gāthā ranges from syllable, word or words, to a quarter or a line of the verse. In some cases, the parallelism extends only as far as a single pāda or a quarter.
As regards the verse-forms applied in Niryukti gāthās, these are, certainly, Prākrita Mātrka Vrttas or metres popularly known as gatha metre. It resembles Āryā metre of Saṁskrt, as a commentary on Chandonuśāsanal”, explicitly mentions- Aryaiva Saṁskrtetara Bhāṣāsu gāthāsamjñeti Gāthālakṣaṇāni'that is Āryā metre of Samskrit is known as gāthā in other languages. Both Āryā and Gäthă consist of 57 mätrās and are quatrain, having four quarters or pādas, containing 12,18,12 and 15 mātrās, respectively. Though Gāthā is predominantly of 57 mātrās, categorised as sāmānya găthā- yet deviation in number of mātrās is also seen, resulting in gathās of 54 metres (Gāhū). 60 mātrās (Udgătha) and 62 mātrās (Gāhini). In other words, gāthă consists of mātrās differing from 57, but on the contrary Āryā strictly sticks to the rule of 57 mātrās, without exception. The pirime feature of these Mātrā vsttas or metres, the class to which gāthā metre belongs, is that there is no restriction either about the number of short or long letters, in a given block.
Coming to the application of gāthā measure in this Niryukti text, we find that general gāthā dominates. In some cases Gāhū Udgātha, Gāhini etc. also are applied. Among the types of general
gathas applied herein, are Buddhi, Lajjā, Vidyā, Kșamā, Dehi, Gaurī, Jain Education International For Private & Personal Use Only
