there. They need a critical edition with introduction dealing with the original sources, different readings, their peculiaritics etc. Dr. Jagdeeshchand Jain has given all such Prakrit verses with Hindi translation as an appendix No. 2 to the Prakrit Sahitya ka Itihasa (Varanasi, 1961).
19. Prākrit Astrological literature :
Astrology has a great place in the Prākrit and Jaina works. Makkhali Gosal is there referred to be a great astrologer. Acharya Bhadrabähu is called Nimittavetta in the Gacchācāravrtti 128 Dharasena and Ārya kālaka are also said to be proficient in astrology.
Jayapähuda of unknown writer which contains 378 verses is yet to be published. The Nimittaśāstra of Raiputra with Hindi translation is edited by Lalaram Shastri and published by V. P. Shastri (Sholapur, 1941). Angavijjā is more important and comprehensive nimittaśāstra which is edited by Muni Punyavijayaji with an introduction and detailed appendices. Jonipāhuda of Dharase nāchārya has been mentioned in Dhavalātīkā, Nisīthavišeşacūrni, Prabhāvakacarita, Kuvalayamālā, etc. The manuscript has been collected by the BORI, Poona. Vaddhamāņa Vijjākappa of Jinaprabh suri was issued with commentary by D. Mohokamalal (Ahmedabad). Karalakkhaņa of an unknown writer is edited by P. K. Modi (Kashi, 1954), Riştasamuccaya of Durgadeva is edited by A. S. Goyani, Bombay, 1945. Some other works on astrology have also been published from time to time 120. No substential work has been done so far on astrology.
20. Critical Studies of Prākrit Languages :
A number of scholars devoted themselves to studies of Prakrit languages and their critical problems. W. E. Clerk's "Māgadhi and Ardhamāgadh,130", M. Sahidullah's "Māgadhi, Prākrit and Bengali131", J. Block's “Asoka, et la Māgadhi” (BSOS,VI), A Banerjee and Shastri's The Evolution of Māgadhi” etc. are the important papers on the problems related to the Māgadhi Prakrit.
As regards the Ardhamāgadhị and Jaina Mahārāștri Prakrit, W. E. Clark's Māgadhi and Ardhamāgadhi (J.A.O. S., Vol. 44, 1924) Alsdorf's "Vasudevahindi, a specimen of archaic Jain Mahārāshtri” (BSOS, 1936), Ghatage's" Instrumental and Vocative in Ardhamāgadhi (IHQ 1937), and "Locative Form in Paumacariya (BBRAS, 1957) etc. are important papers on the subject. M. M. Ghos's "Mahārāshtri a later phase of Sauraseni” (JDC. 1933), M. M. Ghatage's "Mahāraştri language and Literature (JBU. 1936) are the main papers so far on Mahārastri Prakrit.
